Battle of the Bulge

I have mixed feelings about this blog o’ mine.  I like it because it does provide me with a certain level of accountability that I didn’t have before.  On the other hand, I hate it because it provides me with a certain level of accountability that I didn’t have before.  I do not like accountability because ladies and gentlemen, I am a slug.  And because of said slugginess (that sounds better than sluggishness), I have (once again) stopped blogging.  Because, you see, if I stop telling you how poorly I am doing, then I am not really doing that bad.  It only becomes truth once it’s said (or typed) out loud, right?

I wasn’t going to write yet another “I’ve got to get back in the fight” post for fear that you would read it and say exactly that…”Well here she goes again - let’s see how long this one lasts.” ( I know, I apparently think I have the world’s meanest readers.)  But then it hit me that the problem with weight loss that most people have is NOT that they are doing everything right but just don’t lose the weight.  The problem is that we start and stop, start and stop, start and then stop again.

Sticking to the plan and staying committed is pretty much the whole battle.

Dictionary.com defines the word battle as a hostile encounter or engagement between opposing military forces.  That’s what the battle with weight loss is.  It is a hostile encounter between our flesh (cravings, laziness, pain) and our determination to succeed.  It is hostile and it is intense.  Our flesh can push and push and push us into exhaustion and we just wave the white flag and surrender to it.  That is the easiest option in the short term.

But just like in any real battle, if we want true freedom from the oppression, we are going to have to keep fighting even if we lose a few battles here and there.  Eventually the enemy will expose it’s weakness and we will go in for the kill.

So for the past few weeks I have been lying in a military hospital recovering from my wounds.  But the Great Physician has given me the “all clear” and now I am just waiting for my supplies (aka waiting to get to the grocery store), then I am heading back in.

Like Mel Gibson in Braveheart, feel free to imagine me running through the aisles of the grocery store yelling, “FREEEEEEEEEDOM!”
